CU Sound Review

A quick recap of my favorite moments from Pygmalion, the aught-seven edition: 1. Steve from Gentleman Auction House proposing to Kiley (of GAH, as well) as elsinore played a Hawksley Workman song that they had learned for the occasion. She said yes! 2. Mike (Owen) Kinsella’s cell phone causing crazy noises to come out of his guitar through his whole set. 3. Mike Kinsella not turning off the phone that was making crazy noises come out of his guitar through his whole set. 4. My neighbors staring in awe at the big, black, Margot and the Nuclear So & So’s occupied bus parked in front of my house, wondering what the hell could be going on. 5. The revelation of the twin-like nature that exists between elsinore’s Ryan Groff and buzz Music Editor Carlye Wisel. 6. Early Day Miners not playing the song that I raved about in my column two weeks ago. 7. The kid sitting next to me at Andrew Bird smelling like a wino. 8. The kid sitting next to me at Andrew Bird getting up from the front row, in the middle of Bird’s set, to pee. 9. Maserati. 10. Being unable to pick out clothes that didn’t match the clothes that Seth Fein had also picked out every single day. Alright, so let’s talk about what’s happening this week instead of last. Jane Boxall, with a brand new (and very pretty) marimba (that takes 20 minutes to set up), will play at Aroma CafÇ tonight. If you haven’t been lucky enough to see her perform, you should take this opportunity to do so. Venitia Sekema also plays. 8 p.m. start, no cover, all-ages.

Radmaker’s, the hottest music venue in Tolono, will have its weekly wing night tonight, this week with Live Karaoke Band providing the (hilarious) entertainment. The show is free and starts at 9 p.m. — get there early to sign up to sing some Journey. Or the Outfield.

On Sunday, Matt Nathanson will return to CU for the first time in way too long (very precise time measuring we do here at buzz). For the uninitiated, Matt is one of the nicest, hardest-working guys in the music business. He has a new record out, and you’ve probably heard the lead single, “Car Crash,” on the radio or Muzak or something. The album is doing well, and it seems like Matt is finally getting some of the recognition he deserves after over 10 years of making music. You can see him at the Canopy Club on Sunday with openers Cary Brothers (OMFG he was on the Garden State soundtrack!) and Kate Voegele (OMFG Tom from MySpace loves her!) Tickets are $12 and the show is early (6 p.m.). On Wednesday there will be two great shows happening on campus. Smoking Popes will play the Courtyard, while of Montreal plays the Canopy. Neither of these shows will be as awesome as DJ mingram’s ’80s/90s set (titled the Final Countdown) at 10:30 p.m. at Cowboy Monkey. Just think about the possibility of hearing Eddie Murphy’s “Party All The Time” and Boyz II Men’s “Motownphilly” back to back. And now think about hearing “Private Eyes” by Hall and Oates right after that. Again, that’s DJ mingram – 10:30 p.m., Wednesday, Cowboy Monkey. Free. Tell your friends. This has been a totally appropriate and awesome paragraph.

Mike Ingram can be reached at forgottenwords@gmail.com, or at Cowboy Monkey on Wednesday night at 10:30 p.m. Free! He’s also supposed to use this space to remind someone to e-mail him.
