Colleen Green – I Want To Grow Up

The blasé expression of Colleen Green on the cover of her album I Want To Grow Up is a perfect representation of the theme of her album, an account of Green’s apathetic self-reflection of transitioning into adulthood. Don’t let the bubble-gum pink cover of Colleen Green’s I Want To Grow Up deceive you thinking that this is just another generic pop album. What you can expect from this young LA indie artist is a gritty grunge style thrown onto confessional lyrics, a perfect blend of sass and angst. I Want To Grow Up is an appropriation of the works of classic punk acts like the Ramones as much as more pop-like bands such as blink-182.

Aside from the head-banging punks songs, there are also some more laid-back songs that nod to the styles of Stoner and SoCal punk, such as “Whatever I Want.” The repetitive, mechanic drumbeats are present throughout the album, but with the varying tempos and some seething guitar solos, Green gives her listeners a variety of sounds to jam to. Greene has a sarcastic and almost bratty tone on songs like “I Don’t Want To Grow Up”, but she also reveals serious and darker emotions in others like “Deeper than Love”.

Greene’s lyrics and her soft girlish voice make an interesting combination. One can get hooked up to the album pretty easily with the repetitive drums, but still be surprised by the electronic music that is occasionally used. Overall, this album is not completely glazed by pop music nor is it solely nodding to the head-banging grunge style. It is a unique combination of the two and has some catchy tunes. Colleen Greene definitely took a different approach to making punk music and I Want To Grow Up is worth a listen, whether you like more danceable pop, classic grunge, or just a chill bass jam.

Final Verdict: Thumbs up
