Monday Night Miracle

Those returning to campus are likely familiar with Canopy Club’s weekly events, such as Tuesday’s Piano Man or the short lived Open Stage Wednesday. To keep people coming out on school nights, the bar offers great specials like last year’s Monday Night Rage with Zmick, serving $1.50 domestic and $2.50 premium pints. And, of course, these events have no cover, which make the early weekdays the ideal time to check out Canopy Club and save your cash for the weekend.
This semester, Zmick returns to their weekly celebration of music and community with the new and improved Monday Night Miracle, named after that elusive free ticket to a sold out show. Miraculously, Zmick will be playing their genre-bending originals, covers, and unique setlists at Canopy Club – all for the low, low price of free, every week.
Though the band plays for free quite often, they still are devoted to giving back to the community. That’s why, this year, Zmick will support a different local charity or RSO with every Monday night performance.
Buzz talked to Zmick guitarist, Brad Miller, en route to a gig on the telephone. When asked about this year’s new approach to Monday nights, he replied, “We already take a lot from the community so we really want to give a lot back. This seemed like the perfect way to raise money for different causes.” Zmick already has plans to support Chicago charity UStorm, an organization founded by Umphrey’s McGee’s Brendan Bayliss and Jack Straw’s Barry Brown. The charity provides access to music and art education for young people in Chicago.
Brad was excited to mention that Zmick has been hard at work on new material. He said, “We have about fifteen songs ready to put out there sometime this year. Not all at once, of course, but as we vary our setlists, they’ll make appearances.”
It looks like an exciting year ahead for this Urbana four-piece, and they certainly start the year off fast. Don’t miss their upcoming performances at 5:30 pm in downtown Urbana for Sweetcorn Festival, Friday, August 22, at 11:00 pm at Canopy Club, Saturday, August 23, with supporting acts The Brother Whys and Snowsera, and, of course, every Monday night in Canopy Club’s Void Room with a different special guest every week.
