Nerdy News Vol. 1

Nerdy News is your weekly dose into the world of Video Games.

The biggest gaming news to come out of this week is once again involving Sony and its Playstation Network. According to a blog post by Chief Information Security Officer for the Sony group, Philip Reitinger, the company decided to freeze 93,000 PSN accounts. This defensive measure was brought about when a series of false sign-in ID-password pairs were attempted. According to the blog post  “the majority of the pairs resulted in failed matching attempts, it is likely the data came from another source and not from our Networks. We have taken steps to mitigate the activity.”

The 93,000 accounts that were frozen correlates to 0.1% of the total PSN users worldwide. The good news is that the blog post says that if you have credit card information associated with your account, its “not at risk.”

Sony had a similar problem last april when the PSN was breached and all of the users information was at risk including credit card numbers. At the time Sony attributed the cause due to outside sources, otherwise known as hackers. In response, the company then shut down the online interface while they sorted the matter and enforced harsher security measures.

Clearly the steps taken have not been enough to deter malicious actions. As a person who has so much information stored on the internet these day, I would like to know that my valuable and important data is secure. Ever since the PSN shut down, I am still hesitant to entrust them with any vital knowledge about myself, and clearly with good reason.

The Game to Get This Week:

I highly recommend Batman Arkham City. This game is going to be phenomenal. When its predecessor Batman: Arkham Asylum came it out it received the Guiness World Record for Most Critically Acclaimed Superhero Game Ever, and Arkham City is looking to set the bar high once again.. The game has had incredible reviews from gaming sources like Destructiod (85/100), IGN (95/100), and Digital Spy (100/100).

The game will have hours of gameplay, including a side story staring Catwoman that is only availble through DLC for those who buy the game new. Not to mention all the incredible DLC content that will be available later, like the use of Nightwing that will be coming out in November. This is one of the few games that I would say is worth its $60 price tag.

Batman Arkham City is set to release this up coming Tuesday, October 18th.
