This week we remember Prince and his passion for writing music over the course of his 40-year
career. “When Doves Cry” and “Raspberry Beret” were just a few of his classics, but he also
wrote hits for other artists as well like Chaka Khan, Stevie Nicks, and many others.
The Bangles – “Manic Monday”
Prince wrote this song after seeing the Bangles perform in L.A. He sent them a demo of
the song and asked them to record it. This hit landed the group’s first top 10 in the United States.
Chaka Khan – “I Feel for You”
What was originally a ballad written in 1979 for a former crush of Prince, was turned into
a dance hit by Chaka Khan’s then producer, Arif Mardin.
Sheila E – “Love Bizarre”
Prince helped Sheila E’s career soar by recording this duet with her and would become
one of her ultimate hit singles.
Stevie Nicks – “Stand Back”
Stevie Nicks gave Prince credit as an inspiration for the song because she was listening to
“Little Red Corvette” non-stop as she wrote it. She told him about the song and he met with her
in studio to add synthesizer to the track.
