Sound Ground #83

The video shoot for “A Desperate Cry for Help” by The Beauty Shop turned into an early 4th of July party with fireworks and shish kebobs. New drummer Ben “Creech” Ucherek (ex-Tractor Kings) debuted, and the band played sporadically in the shade of a large tree, before a backdrop of countless cornstalks. The dire lyrics contrasted with unprecedented good cheer, thanks in part to three placid dogs on the premises. The Beauty Shop performs tomorrow at Cowboy Monkey with Elsinore and Bailey. Showtime is 10 p.m., and cover is $4.

Last week, The Living Blue introduced a blog with lyrics from their forthcoming album Fire, Blood, Water; the URL is thelivingblue.blogspot.com. The band is on tour in Michigan this weekend but plays here July 23 at The Canopy Club with Heiruspecs, Animate Objects and Al*iteration. Showtime is 8 p.m., and cover is $5.

The week before, Triple Whip resurrected their unissued single “7heroes,” a relic from their old lineup that may yet see release. Tomorrow, the staccato trio headlines a birthday party for Nathon Jones of Brother Embassy, with Brother Embassy and Animate Objects. Show time is 10 p.m., and cover is $5. Triple Whip now has a date for WEFT Sessions: August 29, also at 10 p.m.

At the birthday party, Brother Embassy will incorporate a special guest. Also, the funky foursome (fivesome?) will have recordings for sale for the first time in their two-year history. The limited-edition Whodafunket? EP went on sale this week at C.V. Lloyde Music Center, Caffe Paradiso and Exile on Main Street. Brother Embassy are fresh from a July 4 appearance at the Rantoul Fair Grounds.

Before WPGU-Buzz Best Female Artist 2005 Kate Hathaway goes to California, she plays an acoustic set Saturday at Corkscrew. Corkscrew After Dark is an all-ages, smoke-free concert series; coming attractions include Edie Carey, Teddy Goldstein and Ryan Groff. Showtime is 8 p.m., and admission is free.

Rosewood Guitars will close this month after 31 years of business in Campustown. Proprietor Andy Lund will continue to give guitar lessons at his home. Andy is a member of G. Lee and Jet Blonde and Temple of Low Men, both of which are on hiatus. Fellow Low Men Ian Shepherd and Anthony “Tito” Gravino have been in Iowa and the Philippines, respectively.
