The Andreas Kapsalis & Goran Ivanovic Guitar Duo

Saturday May 30, CU will be graced with the presence of two of Chicago’s finest experimental, instrumental guitarists. The recently formed Andreas Kapsalis & Goran Ivanovic Guitar Duo has been wowing critics from world music and classical guitar circles alike. Now with their self-titled first album out and a slew of Midwestern summer tour dates, they are making a stop at the Canopy Club for a performance that is sure to impress guitar enthusiasts and fans of innovative music in general.
Acoustic prodigy and finger-tapping master Andreas Kapsalis is best known for his work as leader of the renowned Andreas Kapsalis Trio and as a composer of film scores, including Black Gold, a documentary about the injustices of the international coffee business that was included in the 2006 Sundance Film Festival. His talents as a film score composer certainly carry over into the duo, as each song seems to have a certain cinematic quality that truly grabs the listener.
Goran Ivanovic is the composer for innovative Balkan folk group Eastern Blok and recipient of the Album of the Year award from Acoustic Guitar Magazine. He is well-renowned for his Serbian rooted compositions and improvisations and for his mastery of the nylon string folk guitar.
As a duo, their influences blend with stunning harmony, and the voice of each respective artist remains intact and clear. Together, they create a fusion of classical, Balkan, Spanish, world and jazz influences that is sometimes dark and brooding, sometimes fast and lighthearted, but always engaging.
Kapsalis & Ivanovic will grace the Canopy Club stage at 9:30 p.m. Tickets are $10.
