The Three W’s: Weekend Wrap-up and Wassup (Week of 11/7/11)

What a weekend! Smoking Popes came to town and put on a simply amazing show you didn’t want to miss! But if you happened to be babysitting or doing lord knows what, we’ve got you covered (you’ll find a full review, here).

But that wasn’t all that went down this weekend, folk filled the air and our roots shook to the core as part of the 3rd Annual Folk and Roots festival. The festival was filled with all sorts of different music, from Cajun to swing, it could all be heard throughout CU. Luckily, the festival will be back next November, but for more information on all the acts that played this year and more check out their site at folkandroots.org.

This upcoming week will be just as eventful as the weekend that has passed, what with a zombie expert coming to town; yes, zombie expert. Oh, and the most wonderful time of the year has kicked off!

Tomorrow night, Tuesday, November 8th, the Illini Union Ballroom welcomes, acclaimed pre-eminent zombie expert, Max Brooks!

This man is considered by many to be one of the world’s foremost Zombie preparedness experts, whose latest graphic novel reveals how other eras and cultures have dealt with—and survived—the ancient viral plague. By immersing ourselves in past horror, we may yet prevail over the coming outbreak in our time. This “Evening” is sure to be filled with laughs, tears, and tips on zombie preparedness. It all goes down tomorrow night at the Illini Union Ballroom at 7pm; the link to the facebook event is here.

And finally, we are 47 days away from Christmas, which means it’s time to get in cheery and help children in need! WPGU’s Operation Santa kicks off today (November 7th) and runs until December 16th. Of course, we’ll be doing plenty of things in order to raise funds that we will then use to buy presents for children in need throughout the Champaign-Urbana area.

We will be taking any and all donations on the WPGU Request-line at 337-1071. Open your heart, piggy bank, and perhaps (if you’re feeling generous) wallet for children in need! Also, our first scheduled event will take place December 3rd at Noodles & Co. on Green St. between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m. where Noodles will donate 10% of your purchase to the cause! Stay tuned and keep checking back for more information regarding upcoming Operation Santa events and more! Also, click here for the facebook event!

About Aubrey Morse

(Production Director) Hey Y'all. The name is Aubrey Morse and I am not from the south, though people I say I have a southern drawl. I was actually born and raised here in the cornfields of East Central Illinois....REPRESENT. I love music of all sorts, enjoy sports, and I do band. One of my favorite past times is gettting up super early and getting your morning started off right. Oh, and I run on rainbows and caffeine. Best!
