WPGU Must Listen: P4KFest 2018 Sunday Lineup

Pitchfork Music Festival will be in less than two weeks! In preparation, I thought it may be helpful to go through each of the three days and examine some of the standouts on the lineup.

Background On The Festival

Pitchfork Music Festival is a 3 day event that takes place July 20-22nd in Union Park, Chicago. Most people when they hear “Chicago” and “music festival” in the same sentence, automatically throw a Lollapalooza perspective. I’m guilty of this. However, after attending P4KFest last year, I can guarantee that it is not like Lollapalooza. At P4KFest, you’ll find yourself surrounded by a mainly older (21+) crowd. While the festival is all ages, the smaller known acts don’t pull as highly from a teenage crowd. The number of attendants is reflective of the acts – it’s lesser. Which can be nice: no long lines, easier to get close to the stage, and overall a chiller vibe.

Sunday, July 22 Lineup Highlights

Japandroids

Closing out the Blue stage, this garage/punk rock band is sure to give an electrifying performance. They are returning Pitchfork performers – they played the festival back in 2012. Watching clips from the past show gives an accurate overview of what to expect: lots of headbanging, moshing up front, and a great blend of rock music. Check out one of our past reviews of their album Post Nothing and  a link to the 2012 performance I referenced.

Ravyn Lenae

Completely different than the previously mentioned artist, Ravyn Lenae is a new, young artist. At 19 years old, she’s accomplished a lot with her unique blend of neo-soul and ambient hip-hop. Last August, she opened for SZA’s Ctrl Tour and later went on to work with Steve Lacey who produced her third EP, Crush. As a very new artist, Lenae is someone you’ll definitely want to check out. Below is a music video for her hit single “Sticky”.

Japanese Breakfast

One of my highly anticipated acts, Japanese Breakfast is the lo-fi, indie artist for those who have never been able to get into the dream-pop genre. Michelle Zauner, the lead singer, blends in her emotional lyrics, ambient vibe, and demonstrates her rock side through her two albums, Psychopop and Soft Sounds From Another Planet.

Alex Cameron

Possibly one of the stranger acts of the weekend, Alex Cameron is an Australian artist who is known for his unique persona that he’s created through his two studio albums. This persona of a failed musician, constantly drunk sleazeball makes for some rather creepy lyrics. However, Cameron blends it in with catchy beats and 80’s pop, which makes it hard to resist dancing to. Below is a link to his music video for the single “Candy May” off his 2017 LP, Forced Witness. This video is what got me hooked on Cameron and I hope it will have the same effect on you.

About Madeline Vogt

Maddie is currently still transitioning out of her middle school emo phase. You can find her listening to indie rock, taking naps at Espresso Royale, or raving about her home state, Minnesota (RIP Prince). If Maddie won the lottery, she'd probably spend it all on Kanye’s clothing line in an attempt to appear more hip.
