#15 – Discovery: LP

Discovery is the side project of two fantastic, and surprisingly similar indie rock bands which both released their debut albums last year. The band consists of Ra Ra Riot’s Wes Miles and Vampire Weekend’s Rostam Batmanglij (yeah, good luck pronouncing that correctly on the first try).
The project released their debut album, simply entitled LP after the two had done some work together aside from their primary bands. The two bands have had a history together in which both were good friends in college before their main groups hit the mainstream last year. The album moves away from the indie rock that Vampire Weekend and Ra Ra Riot are well known for and moves towards a more electronic and yes, uses the beloved autotune surprisingly well.
The lead single “Orange Shirt” really exhibits a great mix between Miles’ voice and doesn’t let the technology doesn’t destroy what that has to offer. The album offers up a few collaborations aside from the band itself, with lead singer Ezra Koenig of Vampire Weekend on “Osaka Loop Line” as well as on “Carby”, as well as Dirty Projectors’ female singer Angel Deradoorian on “I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend”.
The album fills up the half hour very well and creatively exhibits the talents of these two up and coming indie stars. Perhaps they should help Kanye out with how autotune should really work.

Here’s our countdown towards WPGU’s Album of the Year:

19. Manchester Orchestra: Mean Everything To Nothing
18. Wolfmother: Cosmic Egg
17. The Flaming Lips: Embryonic

#14 coming Tuesday…stay tuned!
