Last Friday WPGU 107.1 kicked off the Valentine’s weekend with the Bitterness Bash, hosted at Firehaus. Contestants wrote their broken hearts out to compete in having the ultimate bitter valentine’s story, for prizes such as Illini Men’s Basketball tickets, Blackhawks tickets, and a trip for two to Miami. The event was kicked off by Social Alcohol Band, who lived up to their name with a crowd begging for encores and having a fun as well as responsible time. Of course there was the occasional crowd surfer and sounds of bottles breaking on the floor, but there was not a sad face in the building. The band performed tracks from artists such as The Avett Brothers to Katy Perry to an almost surf rock version of That’s What Makes You Beautiful by One Direction. After the band finished their maybe fifth encore, the finalists’ stories were read aloud and the top four winners were announced. We heard stories of all degrees; depressing breakups, embarrassing walk-ins, strange encounters with illicit substances, cheating, and more. Although the winner lost her boyfriend, she will get to have a fantastic time in Miami with a friend. Props to WPGU for throwing a cheerful night for the bitter!
