Missy Higgins visits Canopy

Australian singer/songwriter, Missy Higgins, will be performing at The Canopy Club on Monday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. Higgins music has been described as a hybrid of Sarah McLachlan and Alanis Morissette, having a McLachlan-like voice and Morisette’s energetic vibe.
The 24-year-old has had huge success in Australia. She is the winner of 2 ARIA Awards (Australia’s Grammy) for best female artist and her triple platinum album, The Sound of White, was Australia’s best selling album for 2005. Her latest album, On a Clear Night, is achieving the same success, having been awarded Australia’s best selling album for 2007.
Higgins is currently rising from down under and building up her fan base in the United States. Her music has appeared on the popular TV shows Grey’s Anatomy, Lipstick Jungle, One Tree Hill, Smallville and The Hills. Although she has signed with Warner Bros. Records, her music still retains the autonomy of an indie artist.
From her meaningful lyrics about love, finding yourself, and life in general, to her ear captivating melodies and naturally beautiful voice, Higgins’ musical talent is present in all aspects of her songs. In one of her more upbeat songs, “Scar,” Higgins sings of staying true to yourself despite the influence of others to change. “Where I stood,” from her new album, “On a Clear Night,” is about ending a relationship and moving on. Higgins voice is a refreshing change from the mechanical pop that overplays on the airwaves.
Higgins’ music is inspiring and enjoyable, and her dual instrument capabilities, she plays both the guitar and the piano, allows for her to write diverse sounding songs, saving her album from the boredom of too much similarity. Her music has “repeat button” capability and “mood changing” effects, making her rising fame in the United States inevitable.
Higgins will be joined by Joshua Radin for her Canopy perfomance. Tickets for the show are $12 in advance.
