Monday Mixer

I’m just going to say it: this winter has been the most non-magical, least wonderful winter I have experienced. Usually I love the winter months, but without any sledding, snow angels, or snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes, what is there to love? I have decidedly turned on winter and am now fantasizing in the opposite direction: sand, soaking in the sun, and carefree summer. This mixtape is a soundtrack for you to dream of beaches t00.

07 To The Coast

Pet Lions – “To the Coast” – This song was, in my opinion, is the stand out surf-rock song off of the Chicago based band’s debut album, Houses. When I hear it I imagine my friends and me hauling ass towards the beach in a car with the windows down.

01 Floating Vibes

Surfer Blood – “Floating Vibes”

02 Silver Soul

Beach House – “Silver Soul”

-Both of these songs scream summertime to me personally because I have great memories of seeing them two years ago at Pitchfork. Beach House’s rich vocals are unforgettable and dreamlike; the perfect mood for summer nostalgia. Surfer Blood’s chill guitar riffs and young energy make me feel like anything is possible. With lyrics like “If you’re moving out to the west, then you better learn how to surf,” try not to feel inspired to make a spontaneous and probably stupid decision.

01 Understand At All

Cloud Nothings – “Understand At All” – Although this Midwestern power-pop band is not as blatantly “beachy” or “surf-rock” as the rest, I chose this track from Cloud Nothings because I identify its wild and emotionally anarchist spirit with the days of summer.

006-Sun Was High (So Was I)

Best Coast – “Sun Was High (So Was I)” – Picture a lazy afternoon in July. You’re taking a catnap in the sunshine. This is the song that should be playing.

07 Baseball Cards

Wavves – “Baseball Cards” – Maybe it’s just the way they sing “Sha-la-la-la” in that perfect whimsical way, but I’d say this song embodies those hazy summer moments. You’re kind of bored, kind of feelin’ good, and just waiting to see where the day takes you.

02 Youth

Beach Fossils – “Youth” – This is the song that made me fall in love with Beach Fossils. Their lo-fi, yet somehow clear sound is dreamy and wonderful. This band will make you love all elements of the summertime, even the sand trapped in your bathing suit.

03 What You Were

The Drums – “What You Were” – This track is a funny one because I wouldn’t say it’s upbeat, yet I always feel like tapping my feet and shaking lose when I hear it. Maybe it’s the falsetto/squealing that takes place, or the catchy chorus, but it has that chill summer energy that’ll get your head bobbing.

07 Pigeon

Tennis – “Pigeon” – “Pigeon” is my favorite from husband and wife duo of Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley. Moore’s voice is straight out of a 40s era radio broadcast, giving Tennis a timeless, dreamy feel. No one does beachy like they do.

08 God Only Knows

Beach Boys – “God Only Knows” – I thought it only fitting to wrap up this mixer with the quintessential surf rock band. This is one of their sweetest songs and one of my personal favorites, guaranteed to make you feel good.
