A Quickie with … Curb Service, The Beauty Shop and Shipwreck

Three of the most respected local bands are coming together for a triple CD release show tonight at Cowboy Monkey in Champaign. Lorenzo Goetz’s ex-frontman Larry Gates is releasing his debut album, Little Red Recovery Room, The Beauty Shop is promoting their new EP, Just Some Demos, and Shipwreck is releasing their new LP titled Rabbit in the Kitchen with a New Dress On. The show starts at 10 p.m., and you’d be crazy not to pay the $7 to see these bands play. Come on, cough it up!
If your band were incarnated as a celebrity, who would it be, and why?
Larry Gates: Anderson Cooper. Short, smart and sexy.
The Beauty Shop: We’d be a duck because ducks can swim AND fly.
Shipwreck: The Rock — ‘cause that’s what we’re cooking.
What connotations do you think come with the term “indie music”? Are these usually negative or positive?
Larry Gates: “Indie” is the new “alternative.” What once was a small, specific genre is now the label that common folk put on anything that’s not rock … or classic rock … or hard rock. Now anyone can be an “indie” musician. That, of course, is good and bad. The tools are available for anyone with the talent and ambition to make something happen, but at the same time, the playing field is a little overrun with hacks. Power to the people (even if some of those people aren’t worth listening to.)
The Beauty Shop: Negative because of the jags who believe their thoughts on music somehow transcend the realm of opinion. Anything that can be easily categorized must be familiar and, therefore, unoriginal. But take heart “” in the future, everything will be “miscellaneous.”
Shipwreck: The term “indie” has a lot of connotations, none of which pay the bills.
