Monday Mixer-Let’s Dance Through this Week

It’s nice outside and I don’t want to be in my overly air-conditioned, fluorescent-lit office. I’d rather be dancing. Forgive me for my rather sporadic variety here…I couldn’t help myself.

1. Janelle Monae – “Tightrope”

I mean, honestly, how else am I supposed to start this playlist? Janelle Monae brings out da funk in this crazy jam with the help of some thick rhymes (is that a thing?) from the one and only Big Boi. Flap your arms and do the Tightrope!

2. The Bee Gee’s –  “Stayin’ Alive”

Catchin’ Saturday Night Fever on a weekday? That’s right. There’s nothing like a little John Travolta-guided gyration to get your mind off of work. I don’t care how down you are on disco….this tune never fails to make me ready to groove.

3. Kimbra – “Cameo Lover”

Although part of me really wants to put all of Kimbra’s first album, VOWS, on this mix, I think that would be mild overkill…so here’s one of my personal favorites from the adorable New Zealander (who’s quite the dancer herself).

Listen Here:

4.  Billy Idol – “Dancing with Myself”

Classic stuff right here from Billy Idol. And he’s right… we all dance with ourselves sometimes…am I right? ….Guys?

5. The Contours – “Do You Love Me?”

See? All of those solo dance sessions are paying off! Dirty Dancing at it’s finest. Let’s do some kicks and thrusts in honor of Patrick Swayze (may he rest in peace).

6. You’re the One that I Want Mashup

I first heard this catchy little mashup when I was in the middle of a sweaty 5:45am cycle class–part of me wanted to get off that spin bike and shake it! But I would have gotten thrown out of class. The grimy, rough beats from Dre and Snoop in combination with the bubbly Broadway duet forms an ironic and energizing little tune.

7. Justice – “D.A.N.C.E.”

From the ever-electrifying masters of dance, Justice, this dance anthem is sure to get you up and jiving. It’s, “just easy as A-B-C.”

Listen Here:

8. Of Montreal – “Heimdalsgate Like a Promethean Curse”

It’s Kevin Barnes in all of his Sunlandic glory with one of of Montreal’s most upbeat songs. Let the handclaps, poppy synths and chemicals bring you to a dancing stupor.

Listen Here:

9. Franz Ferdinand – “Michael”

Let’s add some brit-rock into the mix, shall we? It’s all about that catchy riff in combination with Alex’s sexy Scotish accent (girl moment). Hopefully those “beautiful boys on a beautiful dance floor” will be present at this year’s Lollapalooza, where the band will be rocking Chicago.

Listen Here:

10. Ellie Goulding – “Lights”

We’ll bring it down a notch with little miss Ellie Goulding. Don’t be fooled by her soft voice, though—this British blonde knows how to integrate her acoustics and electrics into driving and free dance tunes.
