Monday’s Mixer

It’s spring! And that means longer nights, sunshine and the first tastes of summertime. This week is especially wonderful, since (in case you hadn’t noticed) it’s spring break for the UIUC students. This mix tape is filled with songs that will make you wanna relax in the sunshine, drive around and drink some nice cold lemonade. Mmm how perfect.

P.s. I really hope you knew it was spring break….

Andrew Bird – “Fitz & Dizzyspells

This song sounds like it’d be in that scene in a summer flick where a girl dances and runs around in a field. That may sound like a weird analogy, but give it a listen and you’ll agree. This song is airy, free and perfect for a barefoot springtime stroll.

Neon Indian – “Terminally Chill

The title says it all. It’s nice outside, everything is beautiful and we all just want to take the time to relax and enjoy it. Spring is when the desire to be “terminally chill” hits full swing. It’s hard to think about responsibilities in this gorgeous weather, and this song is absolutely carefree.

Bowerbirds – “In Our Talons

I discovered this song last spring, and it became my go-to song for that time where the sun starts to set, but you’re still sun-kissed and warm from the day. It’s about nature, which obviously adds to that, but mostly it just has an earthy and slightly haunting sound. Just like dusk in spring.

Cut Copy – “Take Me Over

Here’s a high-energy song! This represents those springy afternoons where you just can’t sit still. It’s perfect for blasting in the car or for listening to on a run. No matter what’s going on, this song will undeniably make ya wanna get up and dance.

Discovery – “Swing Tree

Discovery is a really awesome side project; it’s Ra Ra Riot’s singer, Wesley Miles, and Vampire Weekend’s keyboardist, Rostam Batmanglij. This upbeat, electronic number is bound to keep your spirits soaring.

Bright Eyes – “First Day Of My Life

This is a super classic Bright Eyes song and, as far as I’m concerned, Conor Oberst can do no wrong. This song is about a fresh, new start, and that’s exactly what spring is. Spring is about renewal, things coming out from hibernation, little baby animals running around and even us students, slowly all drifting toward the Quad.

The Radio Dept. – “Heaven’s On Fire

This song sounds nostalgic. It sounds whimsical. It sounds like you’re gentle floating. It’s definitely calming, and it’s seriously wonderful. This is the perfect soundtrack to lying down in the grass and watching the clouds go by. Give it a try, because you won’t regret it.

Explosions in the Sky – “Be Comfortable Creature

Comfortable is exactly what you will be while listening to this song. Call me a hopeless romantic, but I think this song sounds like falling in love. Even if you disagree with that, you’ll undeniably feel wonderful listening to this lulling melody.

The Strokes – “Under Cover of Darkness

I seriously challenge you to listen to this song and not feel totally pumped. I think this track could take the drabbest situation and make it pretty damn awesome. Off the Strokes’ latest album, Angles, this song is killer.
